The Swahili Community Center was born from the deeply intertwined experiences, hopes, and dreams of refugees and immigrants now proudly calling the United States their home.
Rooted in the vibrant tapestry of East African heritage, this organization derives its strength from the diverse Swahili-speaking communities spread across more than 14 countries.
From the bustling, colorful streets of Tanzania and Kenya to the serene, sun-kissed shores of Comoros and the ancient, labyrinthine alleyways of Oman and Yemen, the Swahili language serves as a unifying force, weaving a rich, intricate thread that binds these lands together.
Within this dynamic mosaic of cultures and traditions, the Swahili Community Center stands as a beacon of inspiration, dedicated to the preservation and celebration of its members' collective history and heritage.
Through its multifaceted initiatives and inclusive programs, the center strives to empower individuals and families while nurturing a strong sense of community pride and belonging.
By forging new pathways toward a brighter future in their adopted homeland, the Swahili Community Center embodies the spirit of unity, resilience, and hope, fostering positive social change and transformation in the hearts and minds of all who pass through its doors.
Origin Story
Anthony Tembera and Chance Mbaye, both former refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, proudly call Hartford their home. As their families flourish in Hartford, they are committed to helping oter immigrants adjust to life the U.S. With their skills speaking multiple languages, work experience with two refugee agencies (Catholic Charities and IRIS), and memories of the challenges of acclimating to a new life in the US, they were passionate in creating a physical space to help. Their dream began two years ago and their journey continues and flourishes. The need for a dedicated Center is even more necessary now that Hartford's last refugee resettlement agency, IRIS, closed it's doors. Now the Swahili Community Center must pick up the pieces with the newly settled refugees.
