Welcome to the Swahili Community Center of Greater Hartford

At the Swahili Community Center we are dedicated to providing a safe and supportive community for recent refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and immigrants of East African heritage. Arriving in the United States can be challenging for newcomerss, at it takes time to learn English, find employment, and acquire new skills to become self-sufficient and productive members of the Hartford community.

What's The Biggest Challenge Refugees Face?

Learning English is the biggest challenge refugees face when starting over in Hartford, as it forms the foundation for everything from finding a job to securing a home. However, long wait times and overcrowded language classes often leave them without the basics and practice needed to build this essential skill. The Swahili Community Center helps individuals maintain their cultural and ethnic identity,  while they access programs and social supports to successfully acclimate to their new lives in the Hartford area.
